2024–present G60/G61 (G60/G61)

6 modifications · The G60 generation is the current 5 Series family and introduced a larger, more digital sedan for the U.S. market starting with the 2024 model year. U.S. sales currently focus on the sedan, including 530i, 530i xDrive, 540i xDrive, and plug-in hybrid variants. This generation remains in production.

2021–2023 G30/G31/G38 (G30/G31/G38) facelift

7 modifications · The facelifted G30 5 Series introduced updated headlights and taillights, revised bumpers, and refreshed infotainment and powertrain offerings. In the U.S., this phase covered the later 530i, 540i, 530e, and M550i xDrive models. It ended when the all-new G60 sedan arrived for 2024.

2017–2020 G30/G31/G38 (G30/G31/G38)

8 modifications · The G30 generation brought a lighter chassis, updated driver-assistance systems, and a more technology-focused cabin to the 5 Series. In the U.S., the lineup centered on the G30 sedan, with the 530i, 540i, and plug-in hybrid 530e joining the range, while the Gran Turismo continued briefly from the prior generation. This generation received a mid-cycle update for 2021.

2014–2016 F07/F10/F11 (F07/F10/F11) facelift

7 modifications · The facelifted F07/F10/F11 5 Series added revised exterior styling, updated technology, and refreshed powertrain offerings while keeping the same generation architecture. In the U.S., this phase included later 528i, 535i, 550i, xDrive, and hybrid models through 2016. It ended before the G30 generation launched for 2017.

2011–2013 F07/F10/F11 (F07/F10/F11)

11 modifications · The F07/F10/F11 family introduced the next major 5 Series redesign, with the U.S. market receiving the F10 sedan and the F07 Gran Turismo. This generation broadened the lineup with turbocharged six-cylinder and V8 models, plus the ActiveHybrid 5 and Gran Turismo variants. It was replaced by the G30-based 5 Series for 2017.

2008–2010 E60/E61 (E60/E61) facelift

13 modifications · The facelifted E60/E61 5 Series brought revised front and rear styling, updated lighting, and equipment changes while continuing the same underlying generation. In the U.S., this phase covered the later 5 Series sedan and wagon models through the end of the generation. It concluded after the 2010 model year.

2004–2007 E60/E61 (E60/E61)

12 modifications · The E60 sedan and E61 Touring marked a major redesign for the 5 Series, with a more angular exterior and a heavily updated interior and electronics package. In the U.S., the generation was sold as the E60 sedan and as the E61-based Sport Wagon, with models such as the 525i, 530i, 545i, and 550i. The sedan received a facelift for the 2008 model year, and the generation ended after 2010 in the U.S.

1997–2003 E39 (E39)

12 modifications · The E39 is widely regarded as one of the most important 5 Series generations, bringing a larger body, sharper handling, and a more premium interior. In the U.S., it was sold as a sedan and later as a Sport Wagon, with six-cylinder and V8 models including the 528i, 540i, and related variants. It was replaced by the E60 generation for 2004.

1989–1995 E34 (E34)

13 modifications · The E34 5 Series replaced the E28 and expanded the range with a more modern chassis and improved refinement. In the U.S., it was sold primarily as a sedan, with the Touring wagon also offered in limited form near the end of the generation. This generation ran through the mid-1990s before the E39 arrived.

1984–1988 E28 (E28)

7 modifications · The E28 was the second-generation BMW 5 Series and the first 5 Series sold in the United States, arriving for the 1984 model year. U.S. versions included four-cylinder, six-cylinder, and later 535i variants, establishing the 5 Series as BMW's midsize executive sedan in America. Production ended before the next-generation E34 reached the market.
