2012–2024 R231 (R231)

9 modifications · The R231 introduced a lighter aluminum-intensive SL with a new body and updated technology for the 2013 model year. It was sold in the United States as the SL550, SL63 AMG, SL65 AMG, and later SL400 and SL450. This generation ended before the all-new R232 arrived for 2022.

2001–2012 R230 (R230) facelift

10 modifications · The R230 brought a fully retractable hardtop to the SL-Class and marked a major redesign for the model. It was sold in the United States from launch and became the basis for multiple AMG and V12 variants. This base phase ended before the 2006 facelifted update.

1971–2002 R107 (R107)

10 modifications · The R107 became one of the longest-running SL generations, spanning the 1970s and 1980s with a removable hardtop and V8 power in many markets. It was sold in the United States throughout its life and defined the SL as a luxury grand touring convertible. This generation ended when the R129 replaced it for 1990.

1957–1971 R121 (R121)

4 modifications · The W121-based 190 SL and 300 SL roadster era established the SL name in the 1950s as a lightweight, luxury open-top sports car. The 300 SL roadster used the R121 chassis code and was sold in the U.S. during its production run. It ended before the next-generation SL roadsters arrived.
