2023–2024 G70 (G70)

3 modifications · The G70 is the current 7 Series generation and debuted in the U.S. for the 2023 model year. It introduced a new design direction and a simplified U.S. lineup centered on 740i and 760i xDrive models. This generation remains on sale in the United States.

2020–2022 G11/G12 (G11/G12) facelift

5 modifications · The G11/G12 facelift brought updated styling and revised technology for the 2020 model year. In the U.S., this phase included the 745e xDrive plug-in hybrid, 750i, and Alpina B7. It remained on sale through 2022, after which BMW transitioned to the next generation.

2016–2019 G11/G12 (G11/G12)

7 modifications · The G11/G12 generation introduced BMW’s carbon-core construction and a more advanced chassis for the 7 Series. It reached the U.S. for the 2016 model year with 750i xDrive and later expanded to 740i, 740e xDrive, M760i xDrive, and Alpina B7 derivatives. The generation was sold in both standard and long-wheelbase forms.

2013–2015 F01/F02 (F01/F02) facelift

9 modifications · The F01/F02 facelift updated the front and rear styling and introduced revised U.S. model naming and powertrain availability. This phase ran from 2013 through 2015 in the United States. It included 740i, 740Li, 750i xDrive, 760Li, and Alpina B7 variants.

2009–2012 F01/F02 (F01/F02)

17 modifications · The F01/F02 generation brought a cleaner design and a return to more conventional 7 Series proportions. It launched in the U.S. for the 2009 model year and included 750i, 750Li, and 750i xDrive variants. This generation also expanded the lineup with V12 and hybrid derivatives.

2006–2008 E65/E66 (E65/E66) facelift

3 modifications · The E65/E66 facelift arrived for the 2006 model year with revised styling and updated powertrains. In the U.S., this phase included the 750i, 750Li, and 760Li. It remained on sale through 2008, closing out the generation before the next redesign.

2002–2005 E65/E66 (E65/E66)

6 modifications · The E65/E66 generation introduced BMW’s controversial Chris Bangle-era design and a major technology leap for the 7 Series. It debuted in the U.S. for the 2002 model year with the 745i and 745Li. This generation also brought the iDrive interface and a broader range of electronics and comfort features.

1999–2001 E38 (E38) facelift

4 modifications · The E38 received a facelift for the 1999 model year, updating its lighting, bumpers, and trim details. This revised phase remained on U.S. sale through 2001. The facelift kept the same E38 body code while modernizing the car’s appearance and equipment.

1995–1998 E38 (E38)

2 modifications · The E38 was the third-generation 7 Series and is widely regarded as one of BMW’s classic flagship sedans. It reached the U.S. market for the 1995 model year and ran through 2001. U.S. versions included 740i, 740iL, and 750iL models, with the long-wheelbase body becoming the dominant configuration.

1993–1994 E32 (E32) facelift

3 modifications · The E32 received a mid-cycle update that refreshed its styling and kept the generation competitive into the mid-1990s. In the U.S. market, this updated phase covered the 1993 and 1994 model years. It continued the same basic E32 body code while carrying revised exterior and equipment details.

1988–1992 E32 (E32)

6 modifications · The E32 replaced the original 7 Series and brought a more modern body, improved electronics, and higher-output engines. It was sold in the United States from 1988 through 1994, with U.S. models including 735i and 750iL variants. The E32 also introduced BMW’s first V12-powered 7 Series.

1984–1988 E23 (E23)

4 modifications · The E23 was BMW’s first 7 Series generation and established the model as the brand’s flagship sedan. In the United States, it arrived for the 1984 model year and remained on sale through the 1988 model year. This generation set the template for later 7 Series cars with a long-wheelbase luxury focus and inline-six and V8 powertrains.
