The GLS nameplate replaced the GL-Class in the U.S. for the 2017 model year, but the vehicle itself remained the first-generation X166 architecture. It was sold in the United States as a three-row full-size luxury SUV with GLS 450, GLS 550, and AMG GLS 63 variants. This base phase covered the initial GLS launch before the 2016 facelifted update carried the model through the end of the generation.
