2020–2025 Fifth generation (U502)

15 modifications · The fifth-generation Explorer launched for 2020 on the U625 platform and continued Ford’s crossover-oriented approach. U.S. offerings included rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive variants, along with hybrid versions and special trims such as Timberline.

2016–2017 Fourth generation (U251) facelift

25 modifications · Ford updated the fourth-generation Explorer for 2016 with revised exterior styling, interior changes, and new equipment. This facelifted version continued through 2019 before the next redesign.

2002–2015 Third generation (U152)

8 modifications · Ford redesigned the Explorer again for 2002, moving to the U152 platform and a more modern interior and chassis. The third generation was sold in the U.S. through 2005 in multiple drivetrain and flex-fuel variants.

1995–2010 First generation (UN46) facelift

18 modifications · For 1995, Ford updated the first-generation Explorer with revised styling and equipment while keeping the same basic body code and truck-based layout. This refreshed phase continued through the end of the generation before the 1995 redesign arrived.

1991–2001 First generation (UN46)

13 modifications · Ford introduced the Explorer for the 1991 model year as a midsize body-on-frame SUV in the United States. It was offered in both 2WD and 4WD forms and established the nameplate as a mainstream family utility vehicle.
