2024–present G90 (G90)

1 modification · The G90 M5 is the latest M5 generation and continues the sedan-only flagship role for BMW M. It is currently sold in the United States and remains in production.

1 modification · The G87 M2 is the current compact M coupe and continues BMW M’s rear-wheel-drive performance tradition. It is sold in the United States and remains in production.

2022–2024 First generation (F98) facelift

1 modification · The facelifted BMW X4 M retained the F98 body code while adopting the updated mid-cycle styling and specification changes. It has been sold in the United States and remains the current X4 M phase.

2021–2021 G80/G81 (G80/G81)

3 modifications · The G80/G81 M3 is the current M3 generation, with the U.S. market receiving the sedan while the Touring body style is sold in other markets. The generation remains in production.

2 modifications · The F90 M5 introduced all-wheel drive to the M5 line while keeping the sedan format. It was sold in the United States and later received a Competition derivative during the same generation.

2 modifications · The F87 M2 became BMW M’s compact rear-wheel-drive coupe and was sold in the United States. It served as the entry point to the modern M lineup before the Competition and CS derivatives arrived.

4 modifications · The F80 M3 returned the M3 nameplate to a sedan-only format and introduced a turbocharged inline-six. It was sold in the United States and became the performance sedan counterpart to the F82/F83 M4.

5 modifications · The F82/F83 M4 replaced the coupe and convertible versions of the M3 with a separate M4 nameplate. It was sold in the United States as both a coupe and a convertible.

23 modifications · The F12/F13 M6 expanded the M6 line into coupe, convertible, and later Gran Coupe body styles. It was sold in the United States and used a twin-turbo V8 shared with other contemporary M models.

2 modifications · The F10 M5 returned the M5 to a twin-turbocharged V8 and was sold in the United States as a high-performance sedan. It replaced the naturally aspirated V10 era with a more torque-focused character.

2011–2024 E90/E92/E93 (E90/E92/E93) facelift

10 modifications · The facelifted E90/E92/E93 M3 continued the V8 M3 formula with updated styling and running changes late in the generation. It remained on sale in the United States through the end of the model cycle.

6 modifications · The E90/E92/E93 M3 family introduced BMW’s V8-powered M3 and split the range across sedan, coupe, and convertible body styles. All three body styles were sold in the United States.

2006–2010 E60 (E60)

1 modification · The E60 M5 brought a high-revving V10 to BMW’s flagship sedan and was sold in the United States. It was a sedan-only model and marked one of the most technically distinctive M5 generations.

2006–2010 E63/E64 (E63/E64)

2 modifications · The E63/E64 M6 revived the M6 nameplate for a V10-powered grand tourer available as a coupe or convertible. It was sold in the United States and shared its mechanical concept with the E60 M5.

2001–2006 E46 (E46)

3 modifications · The E46 M3 is one of the best-known M3 generations and was sold in the United States in coupe, sedan, and convertible forms. It combined a high-revving inline-six with a broader, more polished chassis than the E36.

2 modifications · The E39 M5 paired a V8 with a more understated executive-sedan body and is widely regarded as a benchmark M5. It was sold in the United States and remained a sedan-only model.

1 modification · The Z3-based M Coupe was BMW M’s compact fixed-roof performance model and became known for its distinctive shooting-brake profile. It was sold in the United States and shared its basic architecture with the M Roadster.

1 modification · The M Roadster was the open-top counterpart to the Z3-based M Coupe and used the same compact performance formula. It was officially sold in the United States during its production run.

6 modifications · The E36 M3 brought the M3 nameplate to the U.S. in the 1990s and expanded the lineup beyond the original coupe-only formula. In the United States it was offered as a coupe, sedan, and convertible across its lifecycle.

2 modifications · The E34 M5 was the second-generation M5 and moved the model into a more refined, high-performance executive-sedan role. It was sold in the United States and remained a relatively low-volume, hand-finished performance flagship for BMW.
